No Doesn't Always Mean No!

Well, I experienced the meaning of “never giving
up today” when I butted heads with the NYC
department of children’s services last week. My
son Lorenzo, who was 3 on Sunday, has been
receiving services through the early intervention
program to help him with a speech delay. His 6
month evaluations showed that he was only 2
points over being able to qualify for more
services. At the meeting, I encountered “by the
book” employees who would not bend to my case as
to exactly why I felt my son needed to continue
with services. For nearly an hour, I sat there
and listened to a woman tell me exactly why she
“couldn’t” assign more services for my son. But
I kept explaining my case, and eventually, asked
to speak to her boss. I simply requested a
re-evaluation and a hearing to explain my case.
One hour and 15 minutes later, I walked out of 1
Fordam Plaza, Bronx, NY, with a certificate for 6
months of additional speech therapy for Lorenzo.

Moral? No doesn’t mean no. I “can’t” may often
mean “I won’t” and “I won’t” may often morph into
“I will” if you are just persistent enough!!!
