Last week my son came home with a note from
nursery school saying that a child in his class
had contracted H1N1. Thrilling... I heeded our
Pediatrician’s last year’s advice and took it
lightly. It’s just the flu, right? However, a
couple of days later, our little fish-winner came
down with a fever, cough and listlessness that was
worrisome indeed! So we brought him in. A blood
test and chest X-rays were ordered, and Tamiflu
was prescribed as well as a humidifier, fluids and
lots of rest. I focused my mind on the above tasks
and my organized mind was on a straight path, and
worry at bay, until I tried to get the
prescription filled... The first pharmacy said they
didn’t do “compounds.” The second one said they
didn’t receive any Tamiflu this year. By the
time I got to the third one I was beginning to get
a tad bit nervous. It only took, “Oh, you’ll never
get it. They’re not sending it anymore,” for
me to burst into tears of worry and distress! I
stood by the pharmacy window, like a helpless
female, tears streaming down my face. I had no
idea what to do. After about ten minutes, said
pharmacist looked at me and declared, “Well, I
suppose I could make it for you. But I’m really
busy. You’ll have to wait a couple of hours.”
Um, Okay, no problem there... you can MAKE IT?
Why didn’t you tell me that in the first
place?!!!” It was a very unusual and perplexing
situation, to be told by everyone that Tamiflu
wasn’t available, only to be told that it was,
but simply inconvenient, as it had to be made from
a tablet into a liquid that could be ingested by
children. I didn’t question it... just counted
my blessings. Five days later, Lorenzo is back up
and running, bugging and driving his big sister
crazy. From this perspective, I welcome the
conflicts, lack of harmony, fights, arguments, all
of it!! This kind of experience certainly puts a
different perspective on things and I am eternally
grateful for the health of my children. What a
wonderful Thanksgiving!
