A Magical 10 Year Anniversary Surprise

Last year on our 9th wedding anniversary, my
husband suggested that we go to a restaurant in
Greenwich village in NYC, somewhere we used to go
to eat and sit in for a jam session. (My husband
is a jazz bass player, and I am a pianist). So we
went! Little did we know that we were going to
run into musicians that we knew, and after
dinner, they asked if we wanted to sit in. Of
course, we said yes.

I always wore my wedding ring on special occasions,
but always was careful to put it in my purse if I were to
take it off playing the piano. After I had our two children,
however, I was gigging less and less, and wore the
ring less and less, because it would snag on my
baby's clothes, or I didn't want to scratch my
kids while picking them up. But when I wasn't
wearing it, it would sit lovingly in a small red
sparkly container in a very specific place on my
bureau. It was either in the red case, or on my
finger. I loved the ring as much as I did the
day I got it, and whether I was wearing it or not,
it was always in my heart as a symbol of the
romantic time that symbolized young love.

Now, I had been out of practice putting the ring
in my purse. I hastily took off the ring set, as I
can't play too well with it on. Sometimes it turns
around and the diamond would click on the keys.
I placed it on top of the piano, making a mental
note to myself, something like, "I will be SURE
not to forget I did that. It is not possible,
anyways, because I will see it when I get up to
play." However, after we played a couple of tunes,
the adrenaline was running high. We thanked the
musicians, who wished us a happy anniversary, and
we were on our merry way. Me, and my husband. Me
and my bare finger. Of course I called the restaurant
the minute I got home and realized I didn't have it.
But, the ring was gone. I was heartbroken!

One day I was doing some banking, and suddenly
remembered that I had opened a business account a
while back that I wasn’t using. There was $935 in there.
I thought to myself that maybe I could use this money
towards another ring someday...

This year, December 22nd was our ten-year
anniversary. One year ago to that day, I lost my
ring. My husband asked me what I wanted to do
for our anniversary, and I told him that I wanted
to go back to the ring shop we had gone to, and see if
I could find a replacement ring, and that I had
found some money that we could use towards one.
So... we went. The prices had gone up in a decade,
but we picked a small .38 carrot diamond that, with the
setting the price came to just about $2,000. I used the
$935 as a down-payment.

Two days later, an unexpected check came in the
mail—it was for a song that I had written called
Cat in the Hat, that a company in LA had signed
up to license, five years ago! It turns out that
the show 90210 had used it for two minutes. The
check came out to $1000, almost exactly the amount
of money we needed to pay off the ring!!! It was an
enchanted moment, and my husband and I
jumped up and down like little kids when we opened
that envelope! It truly was meant to be, and a
new beginning. A truly magical anniversary!
