Rejected By a Traditional Publisher-Miracle in Disguise!

Isn’t it amazing how sometimes what looks like a
failure on the outside, ends up being the biggest
blessing! I received a note from my dear friend
Sarah Elizabeth Malinak, (co-author of Getting
Back to Love: When the Pushing and Pulling
Threaten to Tear You Apart) about how grateful
she is to be a published author – with the
freedom to self-publish, promote and really have
the chance to make a difference in the world.
This reminded me of my own publishing story.

I too had it stuck in my head that getting
published had to happen the old fashioned way,
and after spending 4 months querying traditional
agents, managed to land a deal with a highly
regarded NY publisher. Long story short, I am
SOOO lucky that my manuscript was rejected by
over 15 publishers - I had no idea what a
blessing it was to be able to retain creative
control over my work, choose my own cover, be
able to include 1-800-Flowers in my book, use my
book as a tool to help others promote their
work, retain most of the royalties, send my book
to whomever I want whenever I want, go after
special sales and corporate sponsorships, etc.
When I realized that the book is only a calling
card to further enhance other aspects of your
life and business, I was more grateful than I
could ever have imagined for what appeared to be
an ostensible "failure" in the eyes of the
traditional publishing world! I have a friend
that was "lucky" enough to get signed to a
traditional publisher. She received a $3000
advance, paid 15% to an agent, and 50% to a
co-author. She sold over 20,000 copies over a 3
year period - or so she thought - until 15,000 of
them got returned - destroyed. The book was
shelved, and now she has to incur legal fees to
reclaim the rights to her own work.

Self-publishing is a wonderful way for anyone to
create a legacy in this world, and to follow a
dream and make a difference. I am now providing

note: if one's dream is to get their book on a
bookstore shelf, once one achieves a certain
level of success through marketing strategies,
one can most certainly have a good chance of
transitioning to traditional publishing down the line.
